Quarter 1 All Group Advisory Project:
Holiday Pie Fundraiser to Support Refugee Relief
This quarter's all group advisory project IS a community action project where they will raise money for a cause important to them as a whole. Get ready for a little Thanksgiving spirit! The advisory will be making apple and pumpkin pies to sell over Thanksgiving. We will be heading on an advisory outing to the apple orchard sometime in October, find an amazing apple pie recipe that can be frozen and cooked from home on Thanksgiving day, market the pies to the school and neighborhood community, and sell them at an amazing price. The proceeds will be split 50/50 between the advisory (for learning experiences and materials) and Save the Children, a non-profit working to keep refugee children safe. As an advisory we have been closely following the Syrian refugee crisis, and want to get involved. Parents and friends, please consider buying your holiday pies this year from our students. We will have more details and order forms in the near future. Thanks!
Quarter 2 Group Advisory Projects:
1. "Feast" - Cultural Studies and Cooking:
Each advisory has chosen a culture to study. Sara's advisory chose Mexico. On Friday, November 20, we will be demonstrating our knowledge about Mexico and the culture to the rest of the school by preparing crafts, games, trivia and recipes. We will be cooking several very authentic Mexican dishes, and will add more here when we know specifics. Check back for updates and pictures.
2. Friendly Neighbors Project:
Some students in Sara's advisory have grown concerned with the unfortunate misrepresentation of our students in the neighborhood because of some actions by a few select students. We decided to try to build up our relationships with our neighbors by reaching out to them. We wanted to do something kind as well as educate them on the Jennings community. So we made holiday cookies and put together a news letter with student submissions on interesting projects, seminars, trips, service learning, etc. A few students and myself walked around the neighborhood delivering cookies and our newsletter. Immediately after we returned back to school, one of our neighbors that we gave cookies to stopped by and asked if we wanted some office chairs of theirs. The cookies paid off in minutes! The chairs are irrelevant. The pay off was that we connected with a neighbor who we have not had a great relationships in the past, whom felt comfortable enough with us to not only come over to our school to check it out, but to give us nice chairs.
